What is This? The Beacon App Bar Code

Ok tech savvy people, what are these bar codes and what do they do? I have a confession: I've never participated in one of these bar code things namely because I don't know where to send them or what happens once I do send one. Does it wrangle my phone and text to it forever? Does it find out my email and send it countless newsletters? I don't know!

I was in Moxie getting a bang trim and a prescription of hair therapy from Josh's special collection of Moroccan hair stuff, and he asked me what the bar codes do, and I'm embarrassed to say: I don't know.

So I bring it to you, savvy Beaconites - what is this?

Love the idea of an app. I'm guessing it's to help find local businesses. I'm going to try it!

  1. Got some answers!

Kristen Cronin tells us the official name of these codes:
"The bar codes are QR codes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code "

And Karen Donohue of www.echobeacon.com tells us this:
"You have to download a barcode scanning app, then you can just scan these barcodes using your smartphone - this one will get you the Beacon App without having to search for it."

So I searched for an downloaded a barcode app, and will scan these barcodes next time I see one, and will report back! Or chime in if you've done it already...
